It provides a high quality, timely, holistic and compassionate intensive care service to the infants and children of NSW and the Pacific Rim. It also provides care and support for their families at this difficult time. The service is provided using state-of-the-art technology and information management to provide the very best care. It provides intensive care to the most seriously ill children and those needing intensive monitoring. Each year over 1100 children and babies are cared for. The unit provides care for children with many different conditions including cardiac disease, neurosurgery, transplantations and severe burns. The intensivists also act as consultants to the NETS service for the management of children being retrieved from other hospitals. Our intensive care unit also conducts world-class research and provides a comprehensive education programme for trainees in intensive care medicine and nursing. In this way, their expertise spreads and cares for children across the globe. The Rural Fire Service has been supporting the Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital for many years, contributing significantly to the care of children across the State.
